On Mismatches Between Ontologies

In this paper we discuss mismatches between two database schemes (here referred to as ontologies), produced for the UNIKb prototype. We present a (new) classification of system-communication mismatches after we discuss the occurrence of these mismatches between the Cardiff University and Liverpool University ontologies. Thereafter, we investigate to what extent the mismatches can be resolved. We define terminology to be able to give a more accurate description of ontology relations. Using this terminology, we draw some preliminary conclusions regarding ontology mappings. In four appendices we present the Cardiff ER diagram and ontology (expressed in P/FDM), and the Liverpool ER diagram and ontology (expressed in P/FDM).
